Funds Currently Managed by the Boone County Community Foundation

The Boone County Community Foundation currently manages eleven funds of various type.  The total endowed assets (all funds together) was a little over $563,000.00 as of September 30, 2008.

1.  BCCF General Fund (December 2001):
This is our main Discretionary fund established when the Foundation was created in 2001.  When donors give a contribution that is not specified for a particular fund, this is where it goes.  Because this is a Discretionary fund, all of the grant distribution decisions are made by the Foundation Grants Distribution Committee and Board of Directors for any area of community need.

2.  The Dora Jo Byrnside Scholarship Fund (August 2003): This was our first scholarship fund, created by the Byrnside family in honor of Dora Jo Byrnside, a former teacher at Scott High School in Boone County. There have been three scholarships awarded to Scott High School seniors, each scholarship being $1,000.  To obtain a scholarship application, click here.

3.  The Stephens Fund (October 2003):  This is a Discretionary Fund created by the Stephens family of Boone County.  All grant distributions are decided by the Foundation Grants Distribution Committee and Board of Directors.

4.  The Madison Rotary Scholarship Fund (December 2004): This scholarship fund was created by the Madison Rotary Club for Scott High and Van High School seniors.  In past years, the Rotary has chosen to keep scholarship distributions in the fund principle for faster growth.  Rotary and the Foundation Scholarship Distribution Committee will be making a scholarship award from this fund in 2008.  To obtain a scholarship application, click here.

5.   The Thomas T. and Mary Frances Ellis Fund (December 2004):  This is a Donor Advised fund created in honor of Thomas T. and Mary Frances Ellis, former residents and prominent citizens of Boone County.   The donor makes grant recommendations to the Foundation Board of Directors each year, but has chosen to award the past two grants to the Boone Madison Public Library.

6.
The Cooperative Land and Mineral Owners Fund (March 2006):  This is a Discretionary fund created by land and mineral owners in Boone County's coal industry.  This is one of our largest funds, creating the bulk of the our grants.  Because it is Discretionary, the Foundation Grants Distribution Committee and Board of Directors makes the decisions regarding grant distributions.

7.  Boone County Senior Citizen Fund (April 2006):
This is a Field of Interest fund created in the spring of 2006 with a fundraising campaign held by the Foundation and a match of $5,000 by the Ford Foundation through the WV Grantmakers Association.  This fund will create grants for the senior citizen programs in Boone County.

8.  The Ellis/McClure Family Fund (February 2007):  This is a Donor Advised fund created by a member of the family in memory of Lester W. and Ida C. Ellis and A. Ray McClure and in honor of Mark E. McClure and Laura E. McClure Adams.  The donor and family members will make grant recommendations to the Foundation Board of Directors each year.

9.  The Shaffer Family Fund (September 2007):  This is a Discretionary Fund created by  H."Gus" Shaffer, Jr. and Mary Lee Shaffer and  H.G. "Chip" Shaffer, III  and Sarah P. Shaffer.  All grant decisions are decided by the Foundation Grants Distribution Committee and Board of Directors.

10.  The Goldie Stephens Memorial Fund (December 2007):
This is a Donor Advised fund created by the Stephens family in memory of Goldie Stephens for the express purpose of creating grants for area churches.  The donors and family members make grant recommendations to the Foundation Board of Directors each year.

11.  The Stephens Golden Rule Fund (January 2009):
This is a Discretionary Fund created by  members of the Stephens family in honor of their Sunday School class at Madison Baptist Church.  All grant decisions are decided by the Foundation Grants Distribution Committee and Board of Directors, but donors have requested that considerations be made toward the Boone County Resolve Family Abuse Program, the Boone Madison Public Library, and Boone County's senior citizen and community arts programs..
